چکیده

The effects of long-range ~Lévy! diffusion in submonolayer epitaxial growth are studied via kinetic Monte Carlo simulations and rate equations. Such long-range diffusion may be relevant in the case of liquid-phase epitaxy and electrochemical deposition. Results for the scaling of the submonolayer island density and size distribution are presented as a function of the Lévy distribution exponent b and the ratio D/F of the diffusion rate to the deposition rate. Both oneand two-dimensional Lévy flights ~corresponding to infinitely fast hops! and oneand two-dimensional Lévy walks ~corresponding to finite hopping velocity! are examined. Good agreement is found between theoretical predictions and simulations for the dependence of the island-density scaling exponent x on the Lévy exponent b in both one and two dimensions. @S1063-651X~98!12012-3#

Epitaxial growth with elastic interaction: submonolayer island formation.

A model for island formation in submonolayer epitaxy has been studied in the presence of elastic strain by means of a Monte Carlo simulation. The description, based on rate equations, leads to scaling predictions for cluster statistics and diffusion rates. We generalize these predictions to include the effects of the repulsive elastic interaction. The elastic interaction is caused by the deform...

Rapid Note Logarithmic islanding in submonolayer epitaxial growth

We investigate submonolayer epitaxial growth with a fixed monomer flux and irreversible aggregation of adatom islands due to an effective island diffusion, with a diffusivity for an mass k island proportional to k. For 0 ≤ μ < 1, there is a steady state, while for μ ≥ 1, continuously evolving logarithmic islanding occurs in which the island density grows extremely slowly, as (ln t). In the latt...

Influence of island diffusion on submonolayer epitaxial growth

We investigate the kinetics of submonolayer epitaxial growth which is driven by a fixed flux of monomers onto a substrate. Adatoms diffuse on the surface, leading to irreversible aggregation of islands. We also account for the effective diffusion of islands, which originates from hopping processes of their constituent adatoms, on the kinetics. When the diffusivity of an island of mass k scales ...

Microscopic view of epitaxial metal growth: nucleation and aggregation

Thin ®lms are often grown away from thermodynamic equilibrium and their morphology becomes determined by kinetics. The ®nal structure of the epitaxial ®lm is decided in the very early stage of submonolayer nucleation and island growth. Recent experiments with scanning tunneling microscopy opened up an unprecedented view of this early stage of epitaxial growth. Variable sample temperatures enabl...

Critical cluster size: Island morphology and size distribution in submonolayer epitaxial growth.

The dynamic scaling of the island-size distribution in submonolayer epitaxial growth and its dependence on the critical island size i is studied using a realistic model of epitaxial growth for i 0, 1, 2, and 3. An analytic expression for the scaled island-size distribution as a function of i is also proposed. Our results agree well with experiments on FeyFe(100) deposition and on FeyCu(100) d...
